Why is it called this well-known provincial racetrack? To know the cause, it’s a must to return in time, to the nineteenth century.
“The liveliest” of the taverns
At that point, there have been no horse races there but, however a close-by tavern, so named. And the Three Pipes guinguette is “the most lively” of all these in Hauts de Rouen, stories the communication division of the Town hall Bihorel (Seine-Maritime): “Many households from Rouen went as much as meet on Sundays and holidays. “
These pipes, they were not then in this guinguette not to smoke: it was the name of three large casks of cider, which were installed in the courtyard, explains the president of the company of the races of Bihorel Didier Delaunay. “For a few pennies, drinkers could go and fill their pot by drawing the cider from one of the three barrels. You should know that at the time, cider was the festive and convivial drink and that until the beginning of the 20th century ”, adds the town hall.
As for the famous Ponpon de Darnétal cider house, it is specified that the said pipes were more precisely the taps of these three large barrels.
A field lent by the farmer
The guinguette has since become a car garage, but the area has kept a few marks: a bar closed a few years ago in front of the Raymond-Larpin school bore its name, a bakery that is still open is so named, and the racetrack is called, therefore, the racecourse of Three pipes.
The first horse races being contested there date again to 1907. It was then in a meadow, “loaned by the farmer, Mr. Pécot”, relates Madeleine Robert in La Petite Madeleine, Hippodrome and races, that the trials are fought over.
Each 12 months, between March and October, the racetrack now hosts 9 horse racing conferences, on its 1075-meter sand ring, recognized particularly to attraction to very right-handed trotters, as its turns are tight.
