“After two victories in the Tour, many saw you winning a third, but this time you did not succeed…
Yes, and that may not be so bad. People want to see other riders, not the same one every year who wears the yellow jersey. Personally, it's still a very good Tour de France, I gave it my all and I found a better opponent than me. It motivates me to be better next year.
Do you think you made any mistakes during these three weeks?
Yes, a lot of small mistakes, personally and collectively, and we have to study that cold. It's nothing abnormal but fixing it will allow us to progress. My main mistake, it happened during the Granon stage (where he lost 2'51” to Vingegaard). I was too motivated and I wanted to run after everyone, I paid dearly for it. The Jumbos were smart, they got me.
“(The Jumbo-Visma) rode perfectly on this Tour”
You haven't really succeeded in destabilizing them…
There was no weakness in their team. They lost two runners (Kruijswijk and Roglic, injured) and it didn't even affect them too much. Maybe because there were only four of us on our side… They rode perfectly on this Tour, they all showed their strength. We had a lot of bad luck, in preparation and during the race with the Covid in particular (Trentino positive before the start, then two runners). I hope we will have more success next year.
This second place motivates you?
Yes, this year's Tour makes me even hungrier, extra desperate to win extra races. I like challenges, and with Jonas (Vingegaard) I confronted an enormous problem. He beat me, so I'm very motivated for the races to come back, particularly the next Tour. I need to progress to beat this impediment and nonetheless win the Tour. »
