“Did you know about this partnership?”
I knew it was happening after I had Ty Votaw (chargeable for worldwide on the PGA Tour) on the telephone final week. He informed me he had signed a confidentiality clause with the European Tour so I suspected it was getting nearer. And I had a gathering of CPG, the previous PGA of Europe, of which I’m the honorary chairman, so I used to be conscious of this partnership however I could not speak about it.
Is it a partnership, a merger or an absorption?
It’s extra of an engagement earlier than perhaps a marriage, I do not know, I do not know the settlement in any respect. I do know that there are partnerships which have been cast, fairness investments which have been made in European Tour Production and that Jay Monahan, the chairman of the PGA Tour, will have a spot on the Board of the European Tour.
“It’s a great factor for world golf and for Europeans, particularly for spectators. “
Is it the beginning of the end for the European Tour?
No, this is the start of world golf, I try to look at it in a positive light and this partnership makes world golf stronger and the Americans know it very well. We need more union than to fight and anyway, they are stronger. To develop world golf, so that there are more spectators in front of their tournaments, their events must be able to travel. They should not be organized in competition with the other circuits so there, at least, the big tournaments will be protected. This is the good news when you have a big sponsor ready to invest: the players will not be held hostage and the partner will be more likely to have the best players. We will have a better show.
Is that Keith Pelley’s admission of failure?
I wouldn’t say that because I don’t want to get into a controversy again (he hesitates). This is good for world golf and for Europeans, especially for spectators. There will be the possibility of creating a very nice tournament and there will certainly be more American players. On the other hand, it may not be good news for the European Tour.
Is that why you recently mentioned a possible PGA Tour tournament in France?
There’s nothing new. This may be a WGC Double European Tour / PGA Tour badge. And if there is a merger, FFGolf will be delighted to be the first partner of this new entity. It would be a circuit of players rather than a circuit managed by financial funds. “
