The political thread is a razor's edge, so let's not cut it. Besides, let's not forget that its goal is to accelerate the advent of the big evening, one of these four mornings!

I also don't understand why the journalist absolutely wants him to position himself on Taiwan?

After that if it doesn't shock you that he does in the current context of geopolitics in favor of China (to the question he hangs up first then finally answers that they are already working with China or something like that, it's insolence) rather than admitting that the WHO would have done better not to exclude Taiwan, neither before nor on December 31 …

Small point on Iceland:
“Massive” tests are practiced here, around 1000 per day, soon 1500. We are at 5% of the population tested today, the highest rate in the world – it is obviously easier with a population also low.
Half of the tests are done by the public hospital, only for suspected cases. The positive rate has fluctuated between 10 and 20% for two weeks. The private laboratory of CODE Genetics takes care of the other half of the tests, carried out randomly within the population (on a voluntary basis, everyone can make an appointment in two clicks) in order to give an idea of the extent of the real epidemic, even for asymptomatic cases. This rate has remained below 1% from the start.
The aim is to isolate the sick, of course, and to confine for 14 days anyone likely to have been in contact with them recently. There is no general confinement or a ban on going out, the borders have not been officially closed, however for the past two weeks businesses have been closed and gatherings of more than 20 people have been prohibited. In short we remain on a strategy close to that of South Korea it seems to me? Note however that tourists (well what is left) are not tested, and schools – up to the equivalent of high school – remain open but with certain restrictions. It is estimated here that the risk of contagion via these two sectors is low.
The crisis is managed by a panel of experts (at the head: the chief epidemiologist, the national director of health, and a police commissioner) who hold daily press conferences always interesting and transparent on the figures and decisions. We don't see politicians; there must have been only two government announcements from the start, including one concerning (strong) economic measures to save jobs and the economy.
It should be noted that half of the daily positive cases concern people already placed in confinement, which, in addition to the low rate of “community” contamination so far, would prove the effectiveness of current measures. Two deaths, including a tourist, 6 people on shifts, for 930 patients and 10,000 people in quarantine.
The daily updated prediction curves are in any case more positive (no pun intended) than a week or two ago. Kind 5 times less sick and hospitalizations expected for the most pessimistic forecast.

Agree with you two on this point, it's terrible … but what to do?
———————
Ah but no idea, really.
Maybe allow one family member to wear a mask and blouse a day … but it's so risky.
In any case, we know that isolating an elderly person is not intended to protect them, but to protect others.

In this case I invite you to turn your finger 3x around your keyboard before typing and, above all, to talk only about what you know.
Sorry, it falls on you, but if all those who do not know are silent, we would better hear those who know (enter here Lyes).

I'm not going to repeat Aristofan but I don't know either, the only question is whether total isolation will do less damage than non-isolation. We can hope so.

Thank you beltra (and thank you Cush on the oriental thread), it's better when the info is detailed.
So I hear the why of the question, I also hear the criticism induced on the positioning of WHO vis-à-vis Chinese information. However, I do not quite take its non-response as pro-Chinese support, but I understand the extract better.

I regularly see the tweets of the President of Taiwan and it has been good since January that she and her VP tweet (with the insistence that a bad loser in a presidential election would not deny) on the covid and complain indeed of being ignored by the WHO. Ironically, it was probably this sidelining that drove them to find their own solutions and so far contain the epidemic.
I went to find some articles on their management of the crisis and from what I understand it seems hardly applicable in Europe because it involves confining and monitoring via smartphones and geolocation of individuals who have been identified by crossing their medical records (as well as their entourage) and customs data.
