On the sidelines of an exhibition in Berlin, Dominic Thiem said he had the ambition to participate in the US Open at the end of next August.
It will undoubtedly be a relief for the organizers of the US Open. While Roger Federer will not be present due to injury, that Rafael Nadal seems more geared towards the season on clay than on the US tour and that Novak Djokovic is still undecided, Dominic Thiem has in mind the idea of making the trip to New York to compete in the 2020 edition of the US Open. Present in Berlin this week for an exhibition tournament, from which he emerged victorious from the final against the Italian Jannik Sinner (6-4, 6-2), the world number 3 took stock of his program for the weeks to come, with a trip to the United States which takes a prominent place there.
Thiem on the US Open: “Not 100% sure it will take place”
After confirming that this victory on a court installed in the former Berlin airport of Tempelhof would be his “last exhibition game for a long time”, the Austrian confirmed his focus on the US Open. After declaring less than a week ago “I will only play Cincinnati and the US Open”, he confided this Sunday that Flushing Meadows will be “my next tournament I hope”. But a participation which will however remain conditional because of the uncertainty that still reigns over the very holding of the tournament, which must be organized under strict sanitary conditions. “It is still not 100% sure that it will take place, but the plan is to go there mid-August or the end of August”, added Dominic Thiem on this occasion. Now remains for the US authorities to confirm that the world of tennis will have an appointment on New York courts from August 31.
