(Belga) The closed-door tournament set up by Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena Williams' coach, will finally start on June 13. Initially, the first match, a duel between David Goffin and the Australian Alexei Popyrin (ATP 103), was scheduled for May 16 within the academy of the successful coach, in the Nice region.
The tournament, dubbed Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS), will be broadcast live. Fifty games will be played over five weeks. Mouratoglou promises “a whole new way of showing and consuming tennis that will bring even more entertainment and commitment from fans”. In addition to Goffin and Popyrin, the French Benoit Paire and Lucas Pouille as well as the Italian Fabio Fognini will also be there. While the tennis season is suspended due to the coronavirus until July 31, the tournament will meet the distance requirements to ensure the safety of players, coaches and a limited number of employees on site, says Mouratoglou. The Mouratoglou Tennis Academy is used by many professional players, including the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 6). (Belga)
